On September 15th, 2006 at the age of 4, our son Brian was diagnosed with T1D (Type 1 diabetes aka juvenile diabetes). After learning more about the disease and adjusting to our new lifestyle we decided to take action to help find a cure.
In 2007 family and friends joined our fight. The response was overwhelming and Brian's Pride was born. In our first walk we were represented by over 100 family members and friends at the Philadelphia Walk.
By 2014 Brian’s Pride was recognized by the Eastern PA Chapter of JDRF as the largest walk team in Philadelphia.
On February 4, 2016, at the age of 7, our daughter Clare was diagnosed with T1D. Brian’s Pride gained a wonderful new partner and Brian’s Pride & Clare’s Bears was launched.
Over our first 14 years, with your help, we have raised over $400,000. This money has gone directly to fund research to find a cure for T1D.
Both Brian and Clare are happy, active, and healthy with lots of talent.
Brian’s Pride & Clare’s Bears want to make sure that they continue to live these lifestyles along with others who have T1D. Our goal is to help find a cure. Over the last 14 years, we have made tremendous strides.
Since the inception of Brian’s Pride, and in no small part, because of the money you have helped us raise, JDRF has funded research that has led to the development of a human clinical trial for an Artificial Pancreas. This is a device that is similar to an insulin pump however this device monitors glucose levels and delivers insulin as needed. This will allow Brian to not need to wear an insulin pump to deliver his insulin and Clare to not have to receive about 6 needles a day to deliver her insulin. It will also eliminate the need for both of them to prick their fingers (which they each do about 10 times a day) to read blood sugars.
But that is not all. JDRF researchers have also developed Smart Insulin- this amazing development may allow just one injection per day to keep blood sugar levels in normal range. Encapsulation is another wonderful development that is a real possibility.
Encapsulation is a small patch with insulin that will be released as needed by the body without having to wear a pump, take blood sugars, or administer several injections per day.
These developments and more are becoming a reality because
